AMC Lakes of the Clouds Hut

My family and I stayed here for for just a single night, but it made a lasting impression. We arrived at the hut at 4:00 after hiking up the cog line and the West side trail. The weather on the side of Washington was crazy, with pelting rain, 30-40 mph sustained winds, and a wind-chill of 24°F. I literally jumped with joy upon seeing the hut, and was greeted with the sounds of good cheer and the smell of dinner. The food was delicious, and the bunk rooms were quite cozy. The members of Da Croo were all wonderful and very helpful. This hut was a very welcome respite from the harsh conditions, and has fostered many great memories.

Amazing experience to stay on the ridge between Mt. Washington and Mt. Monroe. You can't beat the location. The dorm rooms with bunk beds and snorers aren't a guarantee for the best night of sleep but the food tastes so good after a long day of hiking. Absolutely recommend the experience

This review is an extremely old review but I never got around to it. I was with a group of hikers that arrived extremely late at night due to poor weather. This was back in 2009. The workers allowed us to stay overnight, putting half our group in “the dungeon” and the other half were allowed to sleep on tables in the dining room. I was just a teenager at the time and I slept on a table in the dining room. They even gave us a hot meal despite us not being paying guests. Without this huts kindness our poorly managed trip may have been disastrous as it was lightning and down-pouring rain all evening. After years of hiking across the country through many national parks and national forests this is my most memorable experience. It’s an amazing place to experience. The views are gorgeous and comparable to out west. This is the best hotel in America.

Spent two nights here with my daughter, 7 years old, and 80-some other smelly hikers during what was intended to be a multi-day, hut-to-hut hike of the Presidential Traverse. Alas, the weather was so violently cold and windy that my ambitions and abilities were not aligned, so instead of seeing great views I enjoyed thinking about if what I was actually doing was more an experiment in child endangerment than a nice daddy-daughter vacation. Nevertheless, outside of the actual hair-raising mountainside wind gusts and cold, we had a great time and I am certain my daughter won't forget summiting Mt. Washington for the rest of her life. That said, the hut is incredibly well-appointed. The Hut Croo was awesome, funny, warm, welcoming, and gracious throughout. Their theatrical reminders to not litter and to fold bedding were A-list. Yes, the Lake of the Clouds hut is aptly nicknamed Lake of the Crowds, but for 80+ hikers it felt spacious and gracious and - well, it kept us warm, fed, and well-rested. And on top of it all we met some awesome hikers that ended up becoming a key part of our adventures and experience. Can't wait to return again.

I just came here for a bathroom break before heading back up to MT Washington, and ended up staying for a whole meal. Crows were amazing food was great, and made my trip just that much better. Overall great place, and is definitely worth it to head over to if you’re swing the lake of the clouds.

We came in during 60 mph winds hungry and tired and were greeted with the kindest most welcoming staff. One of us was really cold and shivering and they offered us some hot “tang” and a blanket. They also accommodated vegan meals and made a tofu dinner and vegan breakfast pancakes. The meals exceeded our expectations meat eaters and vegan alike. We arrived “late” at 6:30p and we were able to sit at a table labeled “late arrivals” for dinner. Coffee was out at 5:30 am and they wake you at 6:30 am for breakfast that starts at 7a. If you’re a side sleeper supplement your pillow. It’s bunk beds with three bunks high. We brought our own pillowcases and were given 3 wool blankets each. We came Labor Day weekend and it was pretty cold sleeping in a sweater. Definitely would recommend this place to anyone it was a great experience.

I stayed in the hut Aug 31/Sep 1. The hut was sold out (over 90 spots) and it had full crew on board (11 amazing individuals!). It was my first stay in the mountain hut in the US, and my overall experience was way above expectations I could have had. Things that were awesome: - The crew, their attitudes and their educational programs. - Warm dinner and breakfast, served family-style. - The wool blankets. I honestly think they were sufficient and I could have gone without a sleeping bag. - Pillow. - Cleanliness. Everyting was really clean. No smell in the bathrooms nor in the bedrooms. Things that I'd suggest to be considered for improvement: - Give people heads ups to bring cash for payments for small things (cookies, soup). - The three levels of bunk beds is IMO just too much. I took the upper bunk and it was honestly a bit difficult for me to get there and get out of it. - During the educational programs, the staff member could wear a mike. It was a bit hard to hear everything if you are not sitting very close to a presenting person.

This is a high mountain hut, about tree line, not your typical hotel but if you're hiking and you plan ahead and reserve out this hut, you'll have a unique experience. 1.5 mi below the summit of Mt Washington with amazing sunset views and a sense of camaraderie among the people who hiked there.
